Al-Hijra

Today is the first day of the first month (Muharram) in the Islamic Calendar. Although it is celebrated as the Islamic New Year and marks the Prophet Muhammad’s move from Mecca to Medina in the year 622AD, there are no specific religious rituals performed on this day.  This date is important in that it marks the beginning of Islam as a community in which earthly and spiritual life became integrated and inseparable.
