Places to Stay: Serendipity Guest House – Wilderness, South Africa

Name:  Serendipity Guest House and Restaurant

Location:  Freesia Avenue, Wilderness, South Africa.

Description:  The word serendipity can be defined as a happy, unexpected discovery, which is exactly how I feel about stumbling upon this intimate guest house and restaurant. There are only 4 double rooms, and Elsabe is a hands-on hostess, who makes one feel immediately at home. The rooms are comfortable and each one opens up onto a lovely deck with a view over the lagoon. There is a decanter with sherry for a night cap, and a plunger pot with excellent ground coffee for that first cup in the morning.

Surroundings:  This luxury guest house is located next to a tidal lagoon, which would have been a perfectly peaceful setting if it wasn’t for the drone of traffic coming from the main road that runs along the opposite side.

What makes the guest house special:  The owners Elsabe and Phillip Kuypers are warm and welcoming towards their guests. There are canoes to use for exploring the Touw River and/or lagoon, which form part of the Wilderness National Park. You may even spot the elusive Knysna Loerie from the deck.

Food:  Breakfasts are varied, delicious, and beautifully presented. The croissants that are freshly baked each morning, are divine. The restaurant at the guest house, run by chef Lizelle Stolze, only daughter of the owners, and her husband, Rudolf is rated one of the Top 100 restaurants in South Africa by Diners Club International. Lizelle has received many accolades for her food, which can be described as innovative South African. It is an exceptional fine dining experience that should not be missed, even if you don’t stay at the guest house.

How to get there:  The closest airport is in George, where one can rent a car to explore the area.
