Places To Stay: The French Cottage – Prince Albert, South Africa
Name: The French Cottage
Location: Prince Albert, South Africa
Description: A spacious self-catering cottage decorated with French flair. It is a comfortable, arty space where one immediately feels at home. The kitchen is equipped with everything one needs, and more. The front porch is a comfortable space to linger on, and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. When the wind starts to blow as it often does in the afternoon, one can still sit out on the porch, as it is angled in such a way that it doesn’t bear the brunt of it. From here you can also enjoy spectacular sun and moon rises, as well as sunsets. It is private, yet just a stone’s throw away from the hosts’ house if you may need anything. There is no built-in braai, but there is a Weber if you want to have a braai (barbeque). There is a lovely little fireplace if you choose to visit during winter. Elin has thought of everything to make your stay at the cottage as comfortable as if you are at your own house. It is by far the best equipped self-catering accommodation I’ve ever stayed in.
Surroundings: The cottage is on the edge of town that is reached via a final short stretch of dirt track. This means that there is no passing traffic, and you have a view of an olive grove and hills, yet are still very close to the main street and all the shops and restaurants.
What makes the cottage special: The fact that there is no TV, Internet or traffic noise. What you get in return is peace and quiet, and a million stars at night. Elin and Didier are warm, yet discreet hosts.
Food: The cottage is self-catering. Here you can cook, and even bake to your heart’s content, as the kitchen is outfitted with an amazing array of essentials and gadgets. There is a Nespresso machine (bring your own capsules), plunger pots with filter coffee, a variety of teas, and even hot chocolate, full cream local milk in the fridge, and rusks on arrival. You will also find salt, pepper, olive oil and balsamic vinegar as part of your kitchen essentials.

How to get there: The closest airport is in George from where you can rent a car. Drive over the beautiful Swartberg Pass (a gravel road) from Oudtshoorn, arrive via Meiringspoort and Klaarstroom, or turn off the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort-West onto Prince Albert Road to reach this gem of a town in the Little Karoo.
