Places to Stay: Ruby Cottage – Montagu, South Africa

Name:  Ruby Cottage

Location:  On the farm Badensfontein, 5 km outside Montagu on the R318, Western Cape, South Africa.

Description:  Ruby cottage is a one bedroom cottage that is decorated in a way that is stylish, yet comfortable. Many of the furniture pieces are up-cycled in interesting ways, and quirky décor elements abound. The large, open-plan living and kitchen area contains two large couches and a dining table seating 6 people. The cottage also has a fireplace for cold, rainy days, and air-conditioning for sweltering summer ones. Neither of which I used during the time of my visit, as the weather was simply perfect during my stay. There is a TV with DSTV, but no Internet connection.

Surroundings:  Ruby Cottage is one of four self-catering cottages on a working farm that mostly produces grapes for wine-making. The cottage sits against the slope of a koppie (small hill), and although close to the owners’ home and barns, is private. The only sounds one hears come from farm activities, the occasional car on a dirt road a fair distance away, and the soothing sounds of birdsong. It is possible to go for long walks on the farm, which is a delight.

What makes this cottage special:  Its surroundings and the comfort of various furniture pieces, make for a very relaxing stay and a place that is hard to leave. The best place to be is on the stoep (porch), as the views over the vineyards and mountains are spectacular, especially at sunrise. When I left, Sankie gave me a bottle of wine and a bag full of freshly harvested butternut to take with as a reminder of my stay. Just another example of the warmth and hospitality of the people living in the area.

Food:  The cottage is self-catering, but the kitchen has everything one needs to cook delicious meals, including a microwave, stove and oven. There is also a built-in braai on the stoep.

How to get there:  Cape Town is the closest airport from where you can rent a car. Montagu forms part of Route 62 and following it is a wonderful way of experiencing the beauty of the Western Cape, and tasting some really good wine.
